Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus – A Game-Changer for Thirumazhisai
1. Project Scope & Amenities
Located near Thirumazhisai along the NH-48 (Chennai–Bangalore Highway), the Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus spans approximately 25 acres and is designed to handle over 200 buses, including State Transport, omni, and private services.
The facility boasts modern features such as air-conditioned waiting lounges, food courts, high-speed internet, CCTV surveillance, lifts and escalators, and parking for around 1,700 two-wheelers and 234 (or up to 250) four-wheelers.
To cater to commuters’ comfort, the terminus includes restrooms for differently-abled individuals and transgender persons, mother’s feeding rooms, dormitories for bus crews, ATMs, medical facilities, multiple ticket counters, and retail outlets.
2. Connectivity & Timeline
Originally slated to open by March 2025, the project has seen several revised timelines—ranging from March to August 2025—but is now poised for inauguration by the end of August 2025, under heightened scrutiny from the state government.
Crucially, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has recommended extending the Metro (specifically Line 4 corridor from Poonamallee) to the terminus to enable seamless last-mile connectivity for commuters, especially those heading to or from Bengaluru and other western destinations.
3. Surrounding Developments
The terminus is part of CMDA’s expansive 20-year urban transformation plan (2025–2045) for Thirumazhisai, which covers over 34 sq km and envisions a transit-oriented metropolis with mixed-use development, wellness zones, affordable housing, and transit-access planning around NH-48 and the Outer Ring Road
In particular, the area is being envisioned as a “15-minute city,” where residents can comfortably reach essential services, workplaces, and amenities—by walking, cycling, or public transit—within 15 minutes
